Professor Odd Singles Spotlight

Although the Professor Odd series is most economically read in the Complete Season volumes, the singles are an especially fun way of collecting the individual stories. As there are 18 of them as of this writing, I thought it would be fun to highlight them all together. And, if you are finding this page after returning from World Fantasy 2023 and are looking to complete your collection, have at it!

Episode 1: The False Student University student Alister Bane is a neat, tidy, ordinary person living a neat, tidy, ordinary life. But all this changes when the flamboyant, other-worldly, and extraordinary Professor Odd waltzes into class and turns his world inside out. Suddenly Alister is thrown into the middle of a cat-and-mouse game between the Professor and alien tentacle monster, while a shadowy group of scientists tries to capture them all. Can Alister convince them that he is only a hapless bystander? Can life ever return to normal? One thing is for certain: things are going to get a little bit odd. “Professor Odd: The False Student” was first published in 2011 by Goldeen Ogawa. Episode 2: The Slowly Dying Planet Alister Bane is an ordinary, average, everyday college student who has just begun an adventure of extraordinary proportions. Compelled to flee his home universe by circumstances beyond his control, he finds himself in the company of the insatiably curious Professor Odd, a tentacle monster named Dave, and a talking dog. Together they travel the multi-verse in the Professor’s trans-dimensional ship, the Oddity, and Alister is brought along for the ride. This time the Professor is in quest of good pizza and takes them to the strange world of Niatano, where the sun is red, the people are feathered dinosaurs, and everyone speaks Italian. Oh, and they are in danger of being killed by robots from outer space. Episode 3: The Promethean Predicament Meet Alister Bane, former college student. He is a sensible, conventional, practical young man. Not at all the sort of person you’d expect to find clambering around, in the rain, on a huge stone lightning bolt hanging in the sky. Yet here he is. Since being expelled from his home world, Alister has been traveling between universes with the flamboyant and inquisitive Professor Odd, Dave, a green tentacle monster, and Elo, a highly intelligent mutant wolf. Now, however, he has been separated from his friends and is forced to navigate an “unconventional” universe teetering on the brink of destruction. Impossible stone formations aside, there is also the problem of the sinister hooded natives, and why they have got a living man chained to a rock… “The Promethean Predicament” is the third in a series of novellas chronicling the fantastic travels of Professor Odd and her wayward companions.

Episode 4: The Elder Machine In a universe much like our own, Professor Alister Bane lives a quiet life as an archeologist at Oxford University. But when a nearby excavation triggers a psychotic episode in one of his colleagues, Professor Bane finds himself tumbling down a rabbit hole of strange phenomena and frightening possibilities. Having to contend with a slew of disappearing interns and his own terrifying hallucinations, Alister Bane finds his mind—and his whole world—unraveling even as he searches for a solution. It all comes down to half-forgotten memories, a madman’s allusion to the thing with “terrible arms” and a nightmare of being trapped in a cold, dark place. But when he finds the answer, it is something beyond even his wildest dreams. “The Elder Machine” is the fourth installment in Goldeen Ogawa’s sci-fi novella series chronicling the adventures of Professor Odd—and in this case, Professor Bane as well. Episode 5: The Dragons of Geda Searching for a place to hide after uncovering a treacherous conspiracy among her people, Timantiel Tuvielstytar ya Suku Lohihuya (Kilni for short) instead stumbles into the Oddity, interrupting Professor Odd and her companions’ day at the beach—much to Alister Bane’s chagrin. For Kilni brings with her a troubling tale, which Professor Odd is, of course, bent on investigating. This leads them on a quest that reaches across the marvelous world of Geda; where the descendants of dinosaurs live side-by-side with the elf-like Luinisetians, and in conflict with the mysterious orka. But when they dig into Geda’s history, they find the truth is far more deep and disturbing: now a city is in danger, and the orka are their best hope for saving the elves and dinosaurs alike. “The Dragons of Geda” is the fifth installment in Goldeen Ogawa’s sci-fi novella series chronicling the adventures of Professor Odd and her wayward companions—former student Alister Bane, anthropomorphic wolf Elo Marhütz, and Dave, the green tentacle monster.

Episode 7: The Dogs of Canary Island Arms Division Ranger Omu Akit, a steadfast dog, would never question a mission. Not even when their team Alpha is injured and he must take command of the disparate team of dogs—including the nervous Tech and a Medic with an agenda of her own. Episode 8: Chronostrophe Asynchronous time travel is a tricky thing. Some universes are flexible enough to maintain various timelines without collapsing into paradoxical situations. Others get around the problem by not allowing it to happen at all. But when Professor Odd and her crew visit one of these “temporally rigid” worlds they discover someone has been messing about in both the past and the future. What began as a piece of cake turned inexplicably to pie turns out to be a tremor from a catastrophe that occurred outside of conventional time—sending the universe into spiral of self-destruction. Tumbled together with a mysterious boy and his time-traveling blue horse, Odd, Alister, Elo and Dave find themselves on an adventure across the eons to the far distant future. And to avert the impending destruction of the universe they must step outside time and space altogether. Episode 9: Star Walkers It’s all well and good to use your space-manipulating oddity of a home to open a portal into a starship for a little innocent nebula-gazing, but when the crew of said ship catches you things can get awkward fast. This is the problem encountered by Professor Odd and her friends, which turns out to be the first in a string of problems including, but not limited to: what is this ship even doing here? (It is in the wrong universe.) Are those giant space humanoids peaceful, or actually weapons of absolute destruction? (The answer is yes.) And last but not least: how is everyone going to get home? Episode 10: The Thousand Songs Alister Bane, erstwhile university student turned multiversal traveler, has had his fair share of life-or-death adventures since joining the extraordinary Professor Odd aboard her dimension-hopping ship. This time, she insists, it will be different. This time, they are going to a world as peculiar as the Professor, where even Elo, the bipedal talking wolf, doesn’t need a disguise. Episode 11: Davebot Something is amiss at the Deep Bore Research Base in Antarctica, and though Lieutenant Hutter would dearly love to get back to brewing moonshine and wooing the surly Technician Spalecki, it quickly becomes clear that their remote and vulnerable installation has become the target of an alien invasion so deadly they need to put out a multiversal distress call. Professor Odd Season Three – Kickstarter Update

In the immortal words of Elle Woods: “Congratulations guys… WE DID IT!”

We’ve successfully funded the Season Three campaign!

Professor Odd: The Complete Season Three will be published in electronic, paperback and hardback editions this year! Public release is scheduled for October, but Kickstarter backers who pledged for books should receive theirs a little earlier.

But wait—there’s more!

We’ve also surpassed two stretch goals, unlocking both the Kickstarter-exclusive bonus content e-booklet Odd, Annotated and the Season One audiobook!

The bonus e-booklet includes behind-the-scenes insights, notes, unused history and details, plus a Q&A with the characters. It will ONLY be available through the Kickstarter campaign, but it will be INCLUDED in every reward. As of this post we have a week to go, so there is still time to join the adventure, if you want!

The Complete Season One audiobook is just that: everything from Professor Odd: The Complete Season One (that’s episodes 1-6!) narrated by… ME! It’s going to be great, but you don’t have to read my word for it—you can listen to the raw recording of Episode 1 right here. It’s now available through the Kickstarter as its own reward tier, but it’s also included in all rewards for backers who pledge $20 or more!

The Season One audiobook has a public release date of April 2024, but it’ll be sent to backers just as soon as it’s ready. How soon that is depends on if we reach the third and ultimate stretch goal: commissioning original music to outro the audiobook! As of this post we are… *checks* … just $154 short. I am so excited I can’t even tell you. But, I’ll try!

With this campaign we’re going for all three of the legible formats right out of the gate: electronic, paperback and hardback. There’s also a nice assortment of prints and artwork, some of which are available only through the campaign. I really feel like this project has pushed my illustrating ability to new levels, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with everybody. Finally, for new readers there are options to get the previous seasons, so there’s something for everyone.

And that’s just the beginning: hopefully we meet our funding goal of $600 USD with time to spare, and get a chance to push on to some really cool stretch goals. These are goals that are not an official part of the campaign—just extra things I’m able to do with the increased earnings. There’s the bonus e-booklet Odd, Annotated that has a whole bunch of cool behind-the-scenes facts and commentary for the entire series, and beyond that there’s the release of the Season One audiobook. And beyond that… who knows? We’ll jump through that portal when it opens.

2023 Bend Women’s Expo

I (Goldeen) will be bringing the Heliopause table to the 2023 Bend Women’s Expo this Saturday, April 8th, at the Riverhouse Convention Center right in my hometown of Bend, OR. Introducing the CSA

You may already know that I (Goldeen) have programs on Patreon and Ko-Fi where people can subscribe for a modest monthly fee to get behind-the-scenes updates, work in progress pictures, free e-books, and all other sorts of perks. For a while I’ve toyed with the idea of creating my own in-house version, and this year I’m excited to launch just that!

What’s a CSA?

You may already have heard of a CSA—Community Supported Agriculture—but this CSA stands for Community Supported Artistry. But both are based on the same core principles: Art (like food) is an important part of the human experience—both the creation and the consumption of it. Artists (like farmers) benefit from investment by a community to work ethically, sustainably, and creatively. Community Supported Agriculture works by providing a direct link between farmers and communities, to the benefit of both. Community Supported Artistry is the same concept—but, art!

The Heliopause CSA program is a means for a community to come together to provide the financial support this artist needs to survive and thrive, and the audience her art needs to fully exist—because a book isn’t really real without a reader! In doing so we can foster an environment where my art can fulfill its ultimate purpose: to expand and enhance human culture and existence, free of intrusive advertising, industrial manipulation, pesticides and environmental degradation.

How does it work?

It’s like a vegetable box—for art and stories! When you buy a Heliopause CSA share you not only directly support the production of ad-free, soul-nourishing artwork, you get that stuff delivered right to your inbox! You can also think of it as investing in your own future happiness—because that is exactly what my art and stories aim to provide.

You can choose between a digital-only share (available world-wide) or an analog-only share (US only) or a combo of the two (again US only). Shares can be purchased by the year from the Online Store, or as a subscription by becoming a member on Ko-Fi or subscribing on Patreon. Note that Analog Shares can only be purchased directly from Heliopause, and currently are only available to residents of the US.

To convert from Ko-Fi/Patreon tiers to CSA shares, use this key:

Fellow Traveler/Retro Ally = Minor Digital Share

Valdellunian = Major Digital Share

Analog Shares not available through Ko-Fi or Patreon.

New Products, Projects and Prices

New Greeting Cards coming to the Online Store!

Coming soon to the Online Store: greeting cards for Elephant Garlic, Tiger Lilies, and the Groomin’ Draggins. These will be available as a variety pack of 5 (one of each) for $15 in about two weeks’ time. (Strange Owl cards will also be restocked then as well.)

New Book Launch coming to Kickstarter!

Professor Odd: The Complete Season Three is almost, well, complete! That means the Kickstarter Book Launch is just around the corner. You can get updated the minute it goes live by following Goldeen’s Kickstarter Profile, or head over to her Patreon where you can join the making-of party already in progress.

Price Adjustment coming Sept 6

Due to *waves at generally everything* some products at the online shop will undergo a price increase and the basic shipping cost will go up beginning Tuesday, September 6. This will mostly affect smaller items like the aforementioned greeting cards and potentially stickers. For example: greeting cars, currently $5/each, will increase to $7/each. However there will be card packs available so you can still effectively get them at the old price.

Basic shipping will also increase for Domestic orders from $4 to $5 and Priority Flat Rate will be adjusted to come in line with the standing USPS rate.

Remember these increases don’t take effect until September 6th, so you can order items with the lower price and shipping cost through the end of Summer.

Absent from AnthroCon

In what is becoming a familiar refrain in these spaces, I must regretfully announce that Heliopause will not be present at AnthroCon 2022. This decision was not taken lightly, and my sympathies are with the staff and attendees as they navigate a challenging event in even more challenging times. For the long story behind this decision (and it is not entirely COVID related!) please see this post.

For now, my hope is to have some originals and LE prints in the art show, thanks to the generosity of a kind friend who has agreed to agent for me.

Thanks go out to everyone who has purchased from the online shop, bought my books (from wherever), and subscribed to me on Patreon. You make it possible for me to continue to create new and inspiring works of art and fiction even in the most difficult of times.

Further Confusion 2022

Now with Jan 7th update!

I had hoped to be attending Further Confusion in San Jose this month, both in the dealer’s room and in the art show, but due to the ongoing surge of the omicron variant I am having to modify my plans—which may yet be modified further. For now, here is what I do know:

  1. As of Jan 3, Further Confusion is planning to go ahead with an in-person event on the original dates, January 13-17.
  2. Given the infectiousness of the omicron COVID-19 variant, and despite the con’s comprehensive prevention protocol, I cannot in good conscience attend a multiday indoors event with thousands of other people. My health, and the health of my friends and family (and all y’all) are more important.
  3. As of Jan 6, Further Confusion has been cancelled/posponed. They are currently scrambling the details and my heart goes out to the staff and volunteers.

Here is what I am currently (as of Jan 6) planning:

  • I can put art in the art show, so if the con is worth the risk to you (and no judgement there, these cons are worth a lot!) you’ll be able to see my work and support me there.
  • I will also be in town (in order to hang my art!) and I may be able to arrange an outdoor visit Sunday afternoon with those mutually inclined. However I won’t be doing any public dining or socializing indoors, so be ready with those umbrellas if the weather looks wet!
  • If there is something from me you’ve been yearning for, please drop me a line and we can work something out. Otherwise, my online shop is always open!
  • If you would like to support me, but aren’t in a position to buy anything, sharing is caring! Whether it’s an RT, an email, or word of mouth, every little bit helps. Book reviews are also nice, on whatever platform is convenient for you. I also have some print seconds of books that I can’t sell, but would make wonderful lenders or additions to local Little Free Libraries. If you’re interested in being a Heliopause Ambassador get in touch and I can get you set up!
