Professor Odd Singles Spotlight

Although the Professor Odd series is most economically read in the Complete Season volumes, the singles are an especially fun way of collecting the individual stories. As there are 18 of them as of this writing, I thought it would be fun to highlight them all together. And, if you are finding this page after returning from World Fantasy 2023 and are looking to complete your collection, have at it!

Episode 1: The False Student
University student Alister Bane is a neat, tidy, ordinary person living a neat, tidy, ordinary life. But all this changes when the flamboyant, other-worldly, and extraordinary Professor Odd waltzes into class and turns his world inside out. Suddenly Alister is thrown into the middle of a cat-and-mouse game between the Professor and alien tentacle monster, while a shadowy group of scientists tries to capture them all.

Can Alister convince them that he is only a hapless bystander? Can life ever return to normal?

One thing is for certain: things are going to get a little bit odd.

“Professor Odd: The False Student” was first published in 2011 by Goldeen Ogawa. Now Heliopause Productions is proud to re-release it with a redesigned cover but the same great interior. It is the first in a series of short sci-fi novellas chronicling the adventures of Professor Odd.

Episode 2: The Slowly Dying Planet
Alister Bane is an ordinary, average, everyday college student who has just begun an adventure of extraordinary proportions. Compelled to flee his home universe by circumstances beyond his control, he finds himself in the company of the insatiably curious Professor Odd, a tentacle monster named Dave, and a talking dog. Together they travel the multi-verse in the Professor’s trans-dimensional ship, the Oddity, and Alister is brought along for the ride.

This time the Professor is in quest of good pizza and takes them to the strange world of Niatano, where the sun is red, the people are feathered dinosaurs, and everyone speaks Italian. Oh, and they are in danger of being killed by robots from outer space. No one is getting any pizza until that is taken care of…

Episode 3: The Promethean Predicament
Meet Alister Bane, former college student. He is a sensible, conventional, practical young man. Not at all the sort of person you’d expect to find clambering around, in the rain, on a huge stone lightning bolt hanging in the sky. Yet here he is. Since being expelled from his home world, Alister has been traveling between universes with the flamboyant and inquisitive Professor Odd, Dave, a green tentacle monster, and Elo, a highly intelligent mutant wolf. Now, however, he has been separated from his friends and is forced to navigate an “unconventional” universe teetering on the brink of destruction. Impossible stone formations aside, there is also the problem of the sinister hooded natives, and why they have got a living man chained to a rock…

“The Promethean Predicament” is the third in a series of novellas chronicling the fantastic travels of Professor Odd and her wayward companions.

Episode 4: The Elder Machine
In a universe much like our own, Professor Alister Bane lives a quiet life as an archeologist at Oxford University. But when a nearby excavation triggers a psychotic episode in one of his colleagues, Professor Bane finds himself tumbling down a rabbit hole of strange phenomena and frightening possibilities. Having to contend with a slew of disappearing interns and his own terrifying hallucinations, Alister Bane finds his mind—and his whole world—unraveling even as he searches for a solution. It all comes down to half-forgotten memories, a madman’s allusion to the thing with “terrible arms” and a nightmare of being trapped in a cold, dark place. But when he finds the answer, it is something beyond even his wildest dreams.

“The Elder Machine” is the fourth installment in Goldeen Ogawa’s sci-fi novella series chronicling the adventures of Professor Odd—and in this case, Professor Bane as well. It first appeared in Apsis Fiction 1.2: Perihelion 2014.

Episode 5: The Dragons of Geda
Searching for a place to hide after uncovering a treacherous conspiracy among her people, Timantiel Tuvielstytar ya Suku Lohihuya (Kilni for short) instead stumbles into the Oddity, interrupting Professor Odd and her companions’ day at the beach—much to Alister Bane’s chagrin. For Kilni brings with her a troubling tale, which Professor Odd is, of course, bent on investigating. This leads them on a quest that reaches across the marvelous world of Geda; where the descendants of dinosaurs live side-by-side with the elf-like Luinisetians, and in conflict with the mysterious orka. But when they dig into Geda’s history, they find the truth is far more deep and disturbing: now a city is in danger, and the orka are their best hope for saving the elves and dinosaurs alike.

“The Dragons of Geda” is the fifth installment in Goldeen Ogawa’s sci-fi novella series chronicling the adventures of Professor Odd and her wayward companions—former student Alister Bane, anthropomorphic wolf Elo Marhütz, and Dave, the green tentacle monster.

Episode 6: The Monster's Daughter
In his multi-world travels with the mysterious Professor Odd, former university student Alister Bane has been to some terrific, and terrifying, places: a half-world on the brink of destruction, an alien planet which is actually a moon orbiting a gas giant orbiting a red dwarf star, a far-future Earth devoid of humanity, and a land ruled by dinosaurs and elves. He has never been to a world that frightened Professor Odd—until now.

Now he and the Professor and their companions—Elo, the intelligent wolf, and Dave, the green tentacle monster—are trapped in a world which, though apparently mundane, poses a great danger to all of them. For this is the Professor’s home world, and it contains a force which threatens to end their adventures and destroy the Oddity. Their key to escape lies in a secret long buried in the Professor’s shadowy past—but in uncovering it, what else will be revealed?

“The Monster’s Daughter” is the sixth installment in Goldeen Ogawa’s science fiction novella series Professor Odd, and serves as the finale for Season 1. A two-part episode, this issue includes both “The Detective” and “Subject 0-D.”

Episode 7: The Dogs of Canary Island
Arms Division Ranger Omu Akit, a steadfast dog, would never question a mission. Not when thrown onto a deserted island with only a nervous Science Division Tech to lead them to the secret objective. Not even when their team Alpha is injured and he must take command of the disparate team of dogs—including the nervous Tech and a Medic with an agenda of her own.

Then an honest-to-human, mind-reading wolf appears on the scene, along with a not-a-human asking questions that reveal a conspiracy that shakes the foundations of canine society. Ranger Omu always knew it was better not to ask questions. Too late for that now.

“The Dogs of Canary Island,” the seventh installment in the Professor Odd series, follows the adventures of the universe-hopping Professor and her companions Alister, Elo and Dave. And in this case, seven cybernetically enhanced, anthropomorphic dogs.

Episode 8: Chronostrophe
Asynchronous time travel is a tricky thing. Some universes are flexible enough to maintain various timelines without collapsing into paradoxical situations. Others get around the problem by not allowing it to happen at all.

But when Professor Odd and her crew visit one of these “temporally rigid” worlds they discover someone has been messing about in both the past and the future. What began as a piece of cake turned inexplicably to pie turns out to be a tremor from a catastrophe that occurred outside of conventional time—sending the universe into spiral of self-destruction.

Tumbled together with a mysterious boy and his time-traveling blue horse, Odd, Alister, Elo and Dave find themselves on an adventure across the eons to the far distant future. And to avert the impending destruction of the universe they must step outside time and space altogether.

Luckily, Professor Odd has just the thing for that…

Episode 9: Star Walkers
It’s all well and good to use your space-manipulating oddity of a home to open a portal into a starship for a little innocent nebula-gazing, but when the crew of said ship catches you things can get awkward fast.

This is the problem encountered by Professor Odd and her friends, which turns out to be the first in a string of problems including, but not limited to: what is this ship even doing here? (It is in the wrong universe.) Are those giant space humanoids peaceful, or actually weapons of absolute destruction? (The answer is yes.) And last but not least: how is everyone going to get home? But Professor Odd has yet to leave a problem unsolved, and she’s not about to start now—even if it means risking her own life.

“Star Walkers” is the ninth episode in the fantastic adventures of Professor Odd, multiversal traveler extraordinaire, and her cohort: Elo the mutant wolf, Alister the misplaced university student, and Dave, the bright green tentacle creature.

Episode 10: The Thousand Songs
Alister Bane, erstwhile university student turned multiversal traveler, has had his fair share of life-or-death adventures since joining the extraordinary Professor Odd aboard her dimension-hopping ship. This time, she insists, it will be different. This time, they are going to a world as peculiar as the Professor, where even Elo, the bipedal talking wolf, doesn’t need a disguise. And what are they doing in this world? They are going to enjoy dinner and a show.

Specifically, dinner at a sushi bar served by an octopus-man, and music performed by sentient robots and a singer with fantastical fashion sense. But as the Professor regales them with a tale from her distant past, it becomes clear there is a deep connection between Professor Odd and the pop star on stage, with business that has been left unfinished for far too long.

“The Thousand Songs” is the tenth episode in the fantastic adventures of Professor Odd and her cohort: Elo the mutant wolf, Alister the misplaced university student, and Dave, the bright green tentacle creature.

Episode 11: Davebot
Something is amiss at the Deep Bore Research Base in Antarctica, and though Lieutenant Hutter would dearly love to get back to brewing moonshine and wooing the surly Technician Spalecki, it quickly becomes clear that their remote and vulnerable installation has become the target of an alien invasion so deadly they need to put out a multiversal distress call. But when help arrives, it is a colorful woman with a frighteningly average assistant and a talking dog.

There is also something in a barrel called Dave.

“Davebot” is the eleventh episode in the fantastic adventures of Professor Odd and company: Elo the mutant wolf, Alister the misplaced university student, and most of all, Dave, the bright green tentacle creature.

Episode 12: Cerberus Retired
All Professor Odd wanted was show her friends a marvel of engineering: a train built to run through outer space between planets! Then the train is hijacked by pirates, and it’s up to her and Elo and Alister and Dave to save the day. But the marauders have a sinister connection to Professor Odd which could prove disastrous—especially for her friend and protegé, Alister Bane.

“Cerberus Retired” is the finale of Season 2 and the twelfth episode in the otherworldly adventures of Professor Odd and company: Elo the mutant wolf, Alister the misplaced university student, and Dave, the mysterious green tentacle creature.

Episode 13: The Angels of Tyson 4
Launch yourself into the third season of Professor Odd's multiversal adventures as the crew of the Oddity continues to search for their missing (and mysterious) friend.

Meanwhile, in a world eerily resemblant of 1950s Earth, Joy Daily is just trying to keep the farm together when the appearance of a talking dog makes her question the reality of her own existance.

“The Angels of Tyson 4” is the premier of Season Three and the thirteenth episode in the otherworldly adventures of Professor Odd and her extraordinary friends.

Episode 14: The City Under Ice
The Oddity sends the Professor and company to New Europa City in their search for the elusive Dave, but instead they find themselves embroiled in a high stakes game of murder and mayhem, and a particularly pernicious JANET (Just Another Nosy Extraterrestrial) may just be the answer to all their questions . . . or the beginning of a whole new mystery.

“The City Under Ice” is the second episode of Season Three and the fourteenth overall in the multiversal adventures of Professor Odd and her unusual friends.

Episode 15: The Dreams of Doctor Morag
Doctor Morag is having strange dreams—which isn't surprising, considering she is the senior software engineer of a revolutionary new program for providing mental health therapy to people while they sleep. But when her dreams start to change the universe, Morag finds herself waking up in progressively stranger and stranger worlds, until her only hope of finding her way back is through the enigmatic Professor Odd, and . . . bees?

“The Dreams of Doctor Morag” is the third episode of Season Three and the fifteenth overall in the otherworldly adventures of Professor Odd and her unexpected friends.

Episode 16: Flight of Xifoptero
In a far-future universe, on a terraformed planet, where a race of sapient elephants are the caretakers of a newly extant genus of pterosaurs, Professor Odd and company must come to the aid of a lone elephant and a fledgling pterosaur as they attempt to escape a war. A war between the elephants and an imperialist race of humans who would enslave the elephants and drain their planet's resources.

“Flight of Xifoptero” is the fourth episode of Season Three and the sixteenth overall in the otherworldly adventures of Professor Odd and her unapologetic friends.

Episode 17: Eyes in the Deep
Episode 18: The Last Voyage of the Odyssean
While exploring new elements of the Oddity, Professor Odd and friends discover an unprecedented visitor: another ship in the formless void between universes. But this ship is very much out of place, and on investigation they unravel a distressing narrative of slavery, rebellion, and inter-universal plague. While Professor Odd races to untangle the mystery of two cryogenically preserved murder victims, Alister uncovers hints that their long-lost friend Dave might be closer than they once thought, and Janet is forced to confront the true nature of her identity at last.
